Escaping Winter: Rotorua and Wai O Tapu

You will not miss the smell of rotten eggs once you come to Rotorua. It seems like hell itself exists under Rotorua. Rotorua is within an area of high geothermal activity - that means that you can find hot mud pools, steaming holes in the ground and the devil’s finest soup of sulphur.
The Kuirau Park right in the town centre reminds me a bit of the elephant cemetry of the Lion King.

In Rotorua kommt es einem so vor, als würde die Hölle selbst unter einem brodeln. Der Geruch von faulenden Eiern ist nicht zu überriechen. Die Gegend ist sehr geothermal aktiv, was bedeutet, dass rauchende Quellen, stinkende Schwefelsuppen und blubbernde Schlammpools keine Seltenheit sind.
Der Kuirau Park erinnert mich sehr an den Elefantenfriedhof in König der Löwen.

Wai o Tapu (Maori for “sacred waters“) is the wonderland of geothermal activity - an area with a lot of volcanic activity. Lisa calls it “the place where the devil farts“. And we have to agree - you can find anything from the devil’s ink pots, the devil’s hole and the devil’s bath (which was a shade of really chalky yellow) there. Unfortunately, we did not see the devil in person, but we were quite sure that he was farting the whole time and that was were the smell came from.
Best known is the so-called “Champagne Pool“ - it bubbles just like champagne and has amazing colours. Nature can be so impressive!

Wai O Tapu stellt dabei das Wunderland der geothermalen Aktivität dar. Ein Gebiet mit hoher vulkanischer Aktivität - da halten wir uns lieber nicht zuuu lange auf. Lisa bezeichnet es liebevoll als den „Ort, wo der Teufel furzt“. So ganz unrecht hat sie dabei nicht - wir laufen an blubbernden Löchern vorbei, die den Namen „des Teufels Tintenfässer“, „des Teufels Loch“ und „des Teufels Bad“. Den Teufel persönlich haben wir leider nicht angetroffen, aber wir sind ziemlich sicher, dass der Geruch eindeutig von seinen ganzen Furzen kam.
Auch den Champagner Pool kann man hier finden, der wie ein Glas Champagner ganz schön vor sich hinblubbert und dabei noch beeindruckende Farben zaubert.
