Kohukohu - one of the first European settlements in New Zealand

“kohu“ translates to mist or fog - misty mornings promise a good day in Kohukohu, and you will have a lot of misty mornings here, especially in spring or autumn. You would not believe it nowadays, but Kohukohu was a busy port around the 1830’s. It was mainly a timber industry which turned into a dairy industry once timber was exhausted.
It was actually the third largest town north of Auckland. A lot of the commercial houses burnt down during two major fires. There used to be hotels, a newspaper office, a boatyard, a dentist, a few banks, a post office and shops. Nowadays you can visit the Village Arts Gallery, stop for a coffee or pizza, do the historic walk, relax and enjoy the harbour views. It is a great place to just slow down a bit on your journey up north.

“kohu“ bedeutet übersetzt so viel wie Nebel oder Dunst. Man sagt, man kann hier in Kohukohu einen schönen Tag erwarten, wenn es morgens neblig ist, ganz besonders im Frühling und Herbst. Um 1830 war im Hafen von Kohukohu viel los. Hauptsächlich fand man hier Holzindustrie und als die Holzvorräte erschöpft waren, wurden viele Milchprodukte hergestellt.
Es war die drittgrößte Stadt nördlich von Auckland, das kann man heute nur noch schwer glauben. Viele Geschäfte brannten wegen zweier großer Feuer nieder. Hier gab es so etwas wie einen Zeitungsverlag, einen Zahnarzt, viele Geschäfte, ein paar Banken, Gasthöfe und ein Postamt. Heute kann man in Kohukohu einen Spaziergang machen, der an den historischen Gebäuden vorbeiführt, oder man entspannt sich bei einer Tasse Kaffee in einem von beiden Cafés. Der Ausblick über den Hafen ist dabei sehr, sehr schön.

The houses here have one thing in common: they all look very neat and usually have dreamy gardens. If I had to pick a favourite house, I would probably take the Lavender Cottage. You keep noticing these little things in Kohukohu, just like the rainbow gate, that make you smile every now and then. Sometime it is just a smell your nose catches or a beautiful flower. I even found the Australian frangipani here.

Die Häuser haben alle eins gemein: sie sehen sehr hübsch aus und haben oft einen verträumten Garten davor. Mein Lieblingshaus hier ist wohl das Lavender Cottage. Das Besondere an Kohukohu sind die unerwarteten Kleinigkeiten wie das Regenbogengartentor, die dieses kleine Städtchen so besonders machen.

You can find New Zealand’s oldest bridge in Kohukohu - it is impossible to miss the sign. I was very curious about seeing it. I had imagined what it might look like before. It’s just between the bowling club and the school. Well, have a look:

Neuseelands älteste Brücke steht auch in Kohukohu und wird von einem unverfehlbaren Schild angekündigt. Man findet sie zwischen dem Bowlingclub und der Schule und würde wahrscheinlich etwas anderes erwarten:

Well, I had a look if there was another bridge around - but that's it. New Zealand's oldest bridge.

You might have expected more, it is actually just a part of what the bridge used to be like. It was built between 1843 and 1851 with sandstone from Sydney. The bridge was built for Kauri builder George Russell. Horses and people could cross the Waihouuru Creek below the bridge. The bay next to the bridge filled with sawdust from the procession of kauri timber in the steam-powered mill. They covered the sawdust with rock and soil and you can only see the top of the arch nowadays. Still, it is New Zealand’s oldest bridge.

Etwas klein und nicht wirklich hilfreich für Neuseelands älteste Brücke, oder? Man kann nur mehr den obersten Teil des Brückenbogens sehen. Die ursprüngliche Brücke wurde zwischen 1843 und 1851 mit Sandstein aus Sydney für den Bauherren George Russell. Pferde und Menschen konnten so den Waihouuru Bach überqueren. Es lagerten sich Sägespäne neben der Brücke ab, die man mit Steinen und Erde auffüllte, und somit wurde die Brücke zugeschüttet. Immerhin, es ist immer noch Neuseelands älteste Brücke.

The main road has two little cafés and you can have a look at different artworks from local artists. It only gives you a glimpse of what Kohukohu might have looked like 150 years earlier. You will also find old cannons around the wharf and the war memorial arch.
After the second major fire in 1967, all that remained was the Post Office, the Library and the Butcher’s Shop. The fire hoses were too short to reach the water because the tide was not in and so many buildings of Kohukohu burnt down. 

Auf der Hauptstraße findet man zwei gemütliche Cafés und eine kleine Kunstgallerie mit Werken von lokalen Künstlern. Man kann erahnen, wie Kohukohu wohl vor 150 Jahren ausgesehen haben muss. Einige historische Kanonen und ein Kriegsdenkmal gibt es auch am Anlegeplatz für die Schiffe. 

Waitoru Farm

It’s been quite a while since my last article so this one will be a bit more extensive. I was staying at Waitoru Farm where I worked for Kirsten. She is the owner of her own business and practices natural horsemanship. It is basically about treating the horse as naturally as possible and about bonding with the horse in a harmonic way. Main points of horsemanship are barefoot hoof trimming and bitless riding. The horses at Waitoru farm are given a lot of space on tracks. The paddocks are not formed like squares but in tracks in order to preserve their natural living environment.

Meine letzte Station war die Pferdefarm von Kirsten. Sie betreibt ihr eigenes Business und praktiziert Horsemanship. Dabei geht es darum, die Pferde so natürlich wie möglich zu halten und eine harmonische Beziehung aufzubauen. Dazu gehört auch, keine Mundstücke und keine Hufeisen zu benutzen. Die Pferde haben sehr viel Platz und die Koppeln sind sehr natürlich gehalten, damit sich die Pferde ständig bewegen. 

I helped out a bit with brushing and feeding the horses. Other work duties included weeding which does not mean weeding like you do it in your garden, but scotch thistles that grew up to the height of Janna. Janna was another German girl working at the farm and we spent an awesome time together! The thistles took us four half days, but then we were very proud to see the thistle-free paddock. I could really feel the work in my bones after these days.

Ich habe dabei geholfen, die Pferde zu bürsten, zu füttern und zu führen. Vier halbe Tage lang hieß es Unkraut jäten - kein typisches Gartenunkraut, sondern teilweise meterhohe Disteln, die manchmal so groß wie Janna waren. Janna arbeitete mit mir zusammen auf der Waitoru Farm und wir hatten eine wirklich gute Zeit miteinander. Sie weiß auch viel über Pferde und ist mit ihnen aufgewachsen. Ich komm sie ganz bestimmt einmal in Rügen besuchen. Nach den Disteltagen konnte ich wirklich jeden meiner Knochen spüren.

Of course, there are a lot of animals at Waitoru Farm beside the horses. Mask and Monkey were two cats with two totally different personalities, but it seemed like they loved each other very much despite the fact that they were both male cats (and very very cute together!). Zita and Loki were the two Doberman that kept barking for three nights and regularly brought a possum they had killed. Then there were three pigs, Misty and two piglets - pretty naughty all together, they ran away twice. Nevertheless, they were good help in the garden and Janna had the idea to feed them there so that they would help us prepare the soil with their noses. You would not believe what strong noses they have.
Apart from heaps of chicken, there was one special fella - Joffrey. When I first heard his name, I had to think of the Joffrey from Game of Thrones and yes - Joffrey the turkey was named after him. They have a lot in common and Janna used to face him only with a branch of something because he was likely to bother you. I have never seen an animal like him.

Natürlich gab es auch neben den Pferden viele andere Tiere. Monkey und Mask, zwei Kater mit absolut unterschiedlichen Persönlichkeiten, die sich beide wirklich gern hatten. So süß! Außerdem hatten sie zwei Hunde, Zita und Loki, die uns nachts mit ihrem Gebelle aufgeweckt haben und regelmäßig ein totes Opossum vorbeibrachten. Die Schweine rannten zweimal Weg, zu den Nachbarn oder auf die Straße. Irgendwann haben wir sie dazu gebracht, uns beim Umgraben des Gartens zu helfen. Schweine haben wirklich starke Schnauzen.
Neben den vielen Hühner gab es auch einen ganz besonderen Truthahn - Joffrey. Ja, er ist nach dem Joffrey von Game of Thrones benannt. Die beiden teilen so einige Charakterzüge. Janna ist ihm anfangs nur mit einem Stock in der Hand begegnet. Ich hab noch nie so ein Tier gesehen.

Janna and I had the task one evening to use the plenty eggs so Vincent decided it was time for omelette. Janna and I usually eat scrambled eggs so this was quite a challenge. The first two ones were, let’s say, not perfect at all, but once we knew the ropes, we made three omelette for Vincent - two with ham and cheese and one with veggies. It was very comfortable that Janna was a vegetarian as well. What would you do if you won a million dollars? Well, Janna had her one remarkable idea. She said: “If I was a millionaire, I would become a vegan“. I guess nobody I met has ever answered this question like Janna - and she is so right. If you want to buy organic and local products, live healthy and know what you eat, you really have to have a lot of money. It’s hard to buy soy products and to know they did not destroy rain forest for it. Being a responsible vegetarian or vegan is way too expensive in our time. Janna persuaded me - once I earn enough money, I will only buy good products - and find a way to make them more affordable for everyone.

An einem Abend sollten wir die ganzen Eier verbraten, also gab es Omelette. Normalerweise bevorzugen Janna und ich Rührei, also war es eine kleine Herausforderung. Nach zwei nicht ganz so gelungenen Versuchen hatten wir aber den Dreh raus. Für Vincent gab es zwei mit Schinken und Käse und eines mit Gemüse, für uns nur mit Gemüse. Es war super angenehm, dass Janna auch Vegetarierin ist. Was würdest du mit einer Million tun? Janna hatte da ihre ganz eigene Idee. Sie hat gesagt: „Wenn ich Millionär wäre, würde ich Veganer werden“. Niemanden, den ich bisher getroffen habe, hat die Frage so beantwortet - und Janna hat so verdammt Recht. Sich gesund und bewusst zu ernähren, gute regionale Bioprodukte zu kaufen und zu wissen, was man isst, ist heutzutage so unglaublich teuer. Man weiß nie, wie viel Regenwald für Sojaprodukte abgeholzt wurde. Wenn man ein verantwortungsvoller Vegetarier oder Veganer sein will, braucht man eine Menge Geld. Aber Janna hat mich überzeugt: sobald ich genügend Geld habe, kaufe ich nur noch gute Produkte - und ich werde einen Weg finden, sie für jeden erschwinglicher zu machen.

 
Apart from working, Vincent, Kirsten’s husband, provided quite a nice free time program for us when he had time. It started with a (for me) challenging hike around the property were we had stunning views of the surrounding land. Then Vincent took us on a boat ride on their private lake - I asked if he ever was in the boat with three people and he said no, but luckily it was a good boat and we had a very good time taking photos from our boat. The other day Vincent took us on a motorcycle ride - yeah, I finally got to tick that one off my bucket list! We stopped in Pokeno to have some really nice ice cream. What a pity I could not take a video of the ride. It was great fun to drive on the streets of New Zealand. I definitely want to do that again in the close future!

Vincent, Kirstens Ehemann, hat ab und an für unser Freizeitprogramm gesorgt, wenn er nicht arbeiten musste. Wir haben eine Wanderung durch ihr Grundstück gemacht bis nach ganz oben, wo wir eine tolle Aussicht auf das umliegende Land hatten. Vincent hat auch eine Bootstour auf ihrem eigenen See mit uns gemacht. Und das Highlight war die Motorradfahrt zur Eisdiele in Pokeno. Endlich kann ich Motorradfahren von meiner Bucketlist abhaken! Es war unglaublich und hat so viel Spaß gemacht, ich hätte wirklich gern ein Video aufgenommen. Jetzt will ich unbedingt wieder Mottorad fahren. Blöd.

Thanks to Kirsten and Vincent for the good time at Waitoru Farm. You are great people! I truly enjoyed our dinners and movie evenings and your company. Thank you Vincent for the episodes of Star Trek and for helping me ticking that point off my bucket list! Thank you, Janna, for your company and our many talks and for sharing your knowledge about horses. You are such a nice girl, please keep in touch! Thanks to Claudia who came over many times - it was nice to see another face on the farm!

Good times in Auckland 2

My early return from Great Barrier Island meant that I could spend even more time in Auckland. Luckily, I was not very seasick on the ferry this time, but I missed the dolphins once again. The next day, Kerry had a vegetarian tea party at her house and we spent the day preparing and baking which was awesome! I got to bake my favourite cake, a red wine chocolate cake, and I am very proud that I managed to mix it without a whisk or a beater and only with a fork and my own muscle power. Kerry made a divine lemon and passionfruit yogurt cake and we had plenty of sandwiches. Her friends brought even more delicious food like vegetarian sausage rolls and fairy cupcakes. Mhm, what a great evening it was!

Ich hatte jetzt noch ein wenig mehr Zeit in Auckland, weil ich schon früher von Great Barrier Island zurückgefahren bin. Dieses Mal war ich nicht besonders seekrank, aber die Delfine habe ich trotzdem wieder verpasst. Am nächsten Tag hat Kerry eine vegetarische Teeparty bei sich veranstaltet und wir haben den ganzen Tag über fleißig vorbereitet und gebacken. Ich konnte meinen Lieblingskuchen, Rotweinkuchen, backen und bin sehr stolz, es ganz ohne Handrührgerät geschafft zu haben und nur mit einer Gabel und meiner eigenen Muskelkraft! Kerry hat einen himmlisch guten Maracuja-Zitronen-Joghurt-Kuchen gemacht und wir haben viele Sandwiches vorbereitet. Ihre Freunde haben auch viel leckeres Essen mitgebracht - es war wirklich ein toller Abend.

On Tuesday, I decided it was time to explore a bit more of the city. Kerry even made me some lunch - I do not how long it has been since someone has made lunch for me. So sweet of her! I started walking down Queen Street and then I realized that my Lonely Planet walking tour actually started at the other end where I had just come from so I just did it the other way around. It led me to very beautiful buildings and I saw a lot of graduates in Albert Park. Just have a look at the photos.

Am Dienstag habe ich etwas mehr von Auckland erkundet. In meinem Lonely Planet war eine 4,5km lange „walking tour“ abgebildet, die ich rückwärts angegangen bin. Ich lasse mal einfach die Fotos für sich sprechen:

I wanted to see either One Tree Hill or Mount Eden. On my map, it seemed like Mount Eden would not be too far from the city centre so I decided I wanted to have my lunch on the top. It would be a good opportunity to continue Katja’s and my attempt to walk as much as possible while doing sightseeing. The first challenge was that I could not see Mount Eden and I was just hoping to be walking in the right direction. It seemed to be a longer walk than I had expected, but then I finally arrived at the bottom of Mount Eden. I have to admit I have already been pretty exhausted and walking up was another challenge. Hey, I mean I did it. Even though I doubted my decison several times. I got rewarded: That was the best lunch I have had in a long time with the best city views.

Lonely Planet suggerierte mir, dass Mount Eden nicht allzu weit vom Stadtzentrum entfernt sein sollte, also beschloss ich, dass ich meinen Lunch ganz oben auf Mount Eden haben möchte. Getreu Katjas und meinem Motto, möglichst viel Sightseeing zu Fuß zu machen. Mal davon abgesehen, dass ich nicht wusste, ob ich wirklich in die richtige Richtung gehe und eigentlich dauerhaft daran gezweifelt habe - irgendwann war ich dann da und musste "nur" noch den Weg zum Gipfel auf mich nehmen. Puh - diese Brotzeit hatte ich mir wirklich verdient und ich wurde mit dem besten Ausblick über die Stadt belohnt.

While walking down, I took a different path than I had taken before and it seemed to be kind of a big detour. I was very glad when I finally came to an area with electronic bus signs again. This time I just used the Sky Tower as my orientation. It took me even longer than before, but was definitely worth it! I felt very proud when I arrived in the city centre again and the whole walk felt like good physical exercise for me again. In the evening, I joined Kerry for a surprise birthday party for one of her friends and met heaps of people there. One of them, Hayley, studies nutrition and could give me some valuable advice for my stomach problems. We had some divine food: chili chocolate ice cream that tasted like normal chocolate ice cream at first and then burned down your throat. We even got goosebumps! It inspired Kerry to make her own ice cream soon. It was an awesome evening!

Auf meinem Weg zurück in die Stadt muss ich einen großen Umweg gegangen sein, meine einzige Orientierung war der Sky Tower, aber immerhin besser als bei meinem Hinweg. Mensch war ich froh, als ich wieder elektronische Bustafeln gesehen habe. Am Abend waren Kerry und ich auf einer Überraschungsparty für einen Freund von ihr. Es gab mal wieder himmlisch gutes Essen und ich habe so viele tolle Leute getroffen. Das Chilli-Schokoladen-Eis war unglaublich gut mit Gänsehaut-Garantie. Was für ein weiterer toller Abend!

I was introduced to my favourite café in New Zealand so far: Little Bird in Ponsonby. We met up with Craig and his couchsurfer there and I had again a divine raw vegan passionfruit cheesecake and a raw vegan caramel slice I shared with Kerry - fantastical and divine food they offer there. I still cannot get over the fact how good it was. They even serve your drink with a flower petal. I wish I had my camera with me! That will not be my last visit at Little Bird. Our attempt to have some dumplings in the evening failed because the place had already run out of vegetarian dumplings that evening - so our dumpling mission had to be continued.

Das Highlight des nächsten Tages war ein Maracuja Käsekuchen in einem „raw and vegan“ Café und eine Karamellschnitte - so unbeschreiblich gut. Genau so etwas fehlt in Regensburg noch. Sie servieren ihre Getränke sogar mit einer Blüte. Hätte ich doch nur meine Kamera dabeigehabt. Kerry wollte, dass ich dumplings probiere, aber an diesem Abend waren sie leider aus. Dann eben am nächsten Abend!

It was finally time to see the Buddhist Temple which Kerry wanted to show me. After a little detour, we walked up to the temple and had a very mindful time there meditating for a while. I had never done it in a temple before and really enjoyed this experience. There were also nice short walks around the temple from where you had a great view of the surrounding area. I loved being there.
Afterwards, we went to Orewa Beach and I got the first change to walk barefoot in New Zealand! Such a great feeling of the wet sand under my feet. Once again, we had lunch with a magnificent view of the beach. We were able to finish the dumpling mission that evening - Kerry brought them home after work along with her favourite potato and cucumber salad. I felt so spoilt with divine food this week and I got to meet so many amazing people. It could not have been better!

Wir haben es endlich geschafft, den buddhistischen Tempel in Nordauckland zu besuchen. Dort haben wir ein paar Stunden damit verbracht, zu meditieren und einen Spaziergang zu machen. Bisher habe ich noch nicht in einem Tempel meditiert und ich habe es wirklich genossen.
Danach sind wir noch zum Orewa Beach und ich konnte endlich mal meine Schuhe im Auto lassen. Der nasse Sand unter meinen Füßen war ein tolles Gefühl. Der Tag wurde dann noch perfekt, als Kerry Dumplings und ihre zwei Lieblingssalate mit nach Hause brachte. Eine Woche voll mit gutem Essen und großartigen Leuten - es hätte nicht besser laufen können!

Great Barrier Island

At first, I wanted to go to Waiheke Island to have my “island experience“, but when Robby invited me over, I decided I would have it on Great Barrier Island which is even more secluded and way more far away. On clear and sunny days, you could even see Coromandel. I keep telling people that at some time in my life, I want to live on my own little island so that was a good opportunity to find out if that was the right thing for me.

Zuerst wollte ich ein wenig Zeit auf Waiheke Island verbringen, aber dann hat Robby mich auf Great Barrier Island eingeladen und ich beschloss, dass ich meine Inselerfahrung dort haben würde. Great Barrier Island ist noch mehr abgelegen und ungefähr 4,5 Stunden mit der Fähre von Auckland entfernt. An klaren Tagen kann man Coromandel sehen. Ich erzähle den Leuten immer, dass ich irgendwann auf meiner eigenen kleinen Insel leben will - Zeit, diese Idee auf Herz und Nieren zu prüfen.

You really need to have an off-road car to reach Robby’s place. We tried to make a video of the roads, but the video did not show the bumpy and adventurous feeling you had in Robby’s car. I said it felt like a very old roller coaster. I even was on his quad bike, both the way up and down to his house. Robby’s house is surrounded by mainly untouched nature in a very peaceful setting. I enjoyed spending time in his garden. Milly and Josefine also stayed at Robby’s house and together we had a good time, Milly could always think of a nice meal each evening and my favourite meal was definitely parsley pasta with cheese which was a recipe from Josefine. They introduced me to pancakes with lemon juice and sugar. Gosh, that was so nice, but on the day Milly left I had way to many pancakes. Nothing really beats fresh lemons from the garden.
The toilet was definitely an experience as well - up on a hill outside which was very nice when the sun was shining, but not so nice when it was dark, windy and rainy.

Man braucht ein Offroad-Auto, um Robbys Haus zu erreichen. Wir haben sogar ein Video von der Fahrt gemacht, aber es vermittelt nicht wirklich das abenteuerliche Gefühl, das wir in seinem Auto hatten. Es fühlte sich ein bisschen an wie eine sehr alte Achterbahn. Ich bin sogar mal mit auf dem Quad gefahren. Robbys Haus liegt sehr abgelegen und ist umgeben von hauptsächlich unberührter Natur. Milly und Josefine waren auch bei Robby und wir hatten eine gute Zeit zusammen. Milly hatte immer eine Idee, was wir kochen können. Mein Lieblingsessen waren Nudeln mit Petersilie und Käse. Ich habe zum ersten Mal Pfannkuchen mit Zitronensaft und Zucker probiert - das passt einfach sooo gut zusammen!
Der Gang zur Toilette war definitiv eine Erfahrung - draußen auf einem Hügel und über einen kleinen Weg aus Steinen zu erreichen. Das war gut, solange es sonnig war, aber weniger gut bei Wind, Regen und Dunkelheit.

We did the spring clean around the house and it was a very satisfying feeling after it was done. Milly made the pantry look like a supermarket. She also cleaned the oven and we found out that it was actually blue. There was also some garden work to do: I did some weeding, helped Robby making new beds and clearing the old ones. We tried to build a structure for new tomato beds. It was so nice to have honey freshly farmed from the bee hives. We also did some cleaning at Robby’s painting job and picked up some cow shit. I felt so good once it was done.

Frühjahrsputz stand im Haus auf dem Programm und ich war wirklich zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis. Milly hat der Speisekammer etwas Supermarkt-Flair verliehen und sie hat den Ofen geputzt, der erstaunlicherweise unter dem ganzen Ruß sogar blau ist! Wir haben auch etwas Gartenarbeit erledigt: Unkrautzupfen, neue Beete anlegen und die alten auf Vordermann bringen. Robby und ich haben ein Gerüst gebaut, an dem die Tomatenstauden entlangwachsen können. Wir hatten sogar frischen Honig aus dem Bienenstock! Es gab Einiges zum Saubermachen, denn Robby ist Maler. Am letzten Tag haben wir auch noch Kuhmist eingesammelt. Ich habe mich wirklich gut gefühlt, als wir endlich genügend gesammelt hatten!

 I did not really get to see much of Great Barrier Island, but I enjoyed our two walks down to the beach and I still regret not getting into the water the second time. It was cold and I did not feel so well, but the next time nothing will stop me. How often do you have a beach to your own? It is really amazing and I felt a bit infinite there, you know? Just looking at the water and forgetting everything around you. The girls collected some driftwood and some of them were real pieces of art. Milly found a pretty decent walking stick and she looked like a ranger on the “bushwalk“ back to the house again.

Wirklich viel von Great Barrier Island habe ich nicht gesehen, aber ich habe die zwei Wanderungen zum Strand bei Robbys Haus wirklich sehr genossen. Ich bereue es wirklich, nicht ins Wasser gegangen zu sein - nächstes Mal auf jeden Fall. Wie oft hat man schon einen Strand für sich allein? Es war ein großartiges Gefühl, dort den Sonnenuntergang zu sehen und alles um sich herum zu vergessen. Die zwei Mädels haben Treibholz am Strand gesammelt und vieles davon sah wirklich wie Kunst aus. Milly hat Treibholz gefunden, das perfekt als Gehstock durchging.

It was a valuable experience. I learnt even more not to take anything for granted like hot water, an inside toilet, unlimited Internet and enough electricity. I learnt how to play two new dice games (but I do not know how to spell them) and backgammon. I learnt how to make parsley pasta. I learnt about the challenges of self-sufficiency and that I need to have civilization from time to time. I still have my island dream, but maybe just to take a few days off and not actually to live on the island the whole time.

Es war eine wertvolle Erfahrung auf Great Barrier Island. Ich habe noch mehr gelernt, nichts für selbstverständlich zu nehmen, wie zum Beispiel heißes Wasser, eine Toilette im Haus, unbegrenztes Internet und genügend Elektrizität. Ich habe gelernt, wie man Backgammon spielt und wie man Josefines Petersilie-Nudeln kocht. Ich habe die Herausforderungen eines “self-sufficiency“ Haushalts kennengelernt und gemerkt, dass ich hin und wieder Zivilisation brauche und schätze. Ich hätte immer noch gerne eine eigene Insel für mich allein, aber nicht mehr um dauerhaft dort zu leben, sondern um einfach ein paar Tage Auszeit zu nehmen.

Good times in Auckland

After spending quite an amazing week in Sydney, I was curious was Auckland would be like. I have to be honest: The pictures I saw of the city centre did not really impress me so I thought I might stay a bit out of the city for the first days. Joey made that possible for me!
It was my fourth flight and I imagined it would not be so nice like the ones before, but I cannot actually remember much. I even almost slept through the take-off which was nice because time passed so quickly. Auckland did not wait with nice weather for me, but Joey made everything so much brighter by picking me up from the airport and inviting me for the nicest curry I had ever tasted. Yummy! I felt so at home at his place and we had a long chat in the evening which I really appreciated after doing small-talk for quite a while. We had a typical, pink New Zealand chocolate with millions and thousands of sugar sprinkles, chili chocolate and white chocolate which Joey thought was like velvet. How right he was.

Nachdem ich doch eine wirklich schöne Woche in Sydney verbracht hatte, war ich aufgeregt, wie es mir wohl in Auckland gefallen würde. Ich bin ehrlich: Die Fotos, die ich von der Innenstadt gesehen hatte, haben mich nicht wirklich vom Hocker gehauen. Deswegen wollte ich zuerst etwas abseits von der Stadt sein und dank Joey hat das auch geklappt.
Das war jetzt mein vierter Flug und ich hatte das Gefühl, dass er nicht so angenehm wie die Flüge davor sein würde. Im Endeffekt erinnere ich mich nicht an viel. sogar den Start habe ich fast verschlafen. In Auckland wartete kein gutes Wetter auf mich, aber Joey hat meinen Abend gerettet, indem er mich vom Flughafen abgeholt und mich zum besten Curry überhaupt eingeladen hat. Lecker! Ich habe mich bei ihm so wohl gefühlt und wir haben wirklich bis in die Nacht geredet. Das war ein gutes Gefühl, nachdem die meisten Konversationen vorher hauptsächlich aus Smalltalk bestanden. Wir haben so viele verschiedene Sorten Schokolade probiert: typische, pinke, neuseeländische Schokolade mit unglaublich vielen Streuseln, Chilischokolade und weiße Lindt-Schoki, die einfach nur himmlisch auf der Zunge zerfloss.

During the next day I got to meet Chris who travels the world to write about haunted places. Isn’t that an amazing mission? I was taking photographs of Joey’s amazing view when we first met. I do really appreciate meeting so many great people. Joey made pancakes or “crumpets“ for us and in the evening we got introduced to quite an important part of New Zealand and South African culture - rugby. Joey made Chris and me support the South African team. I just figured out what rugby was all about by the end of the game, but the evening was real fun, especially together with Chris. And the food, oh my gosh, the food. Fantastical (mixture of fantastic and magical).
Chris put a lot of effort into teaching me the word “ditch“, basically by putting her car into the ditch in front of Joeys house twice and afterwards into the mud - I will never ever forget that word again. I wish it would always be so much fun to learn a language, but that is really not a convenient thing to do just to teach someone a new word!

Am nächsten Tag traf ich auf Chris. Sie bereist die Welt, um dann über verlassene, gruselige Spukplätze zu schreiben. Ist das nicht eine geniale Idee? Ich schätze es wirklich sehr, so viele tolle Menschen kennenzulernen. Joey hat Pancakes für uns gemacht und abends hat er uns zu seinen südafrikanischen Freunden mitgenommen, um Rugby zu schauen. Südafrika gegen Neuseeland. Wir sollten das südafrikanische Team unterstützen. Ich bin mir aber nicht wirklich sicher, ob wir eine große Hilfe waren. Trotzdem war der Abend war auf jeden Fall sehr schön und lustig, vor allem zusammen mit Chris. Als das sich das Spiel dem Ende zuneigte, hatte ich endlich einigermaßen begriffen, wie Rugby abläuft. Und, oh Gott, das Essen. Einfach nur lecker.
 
My next mission was to stay in Devonport for a few days and to get some things done, like my IRD number and my bank account. It is pretty convenient to get there by ferry. Andrea, who moved from Switzerland to New Zealand 5 years ago, helped me a lot. She made an amazing veggie lasagne for me and we ended up having it 2 evenings in a row because it was so good. I cannot really believe how much delicious food I get to eat here! There is also a french café in Devonport and I had some really nice coffee there. By the way, I started drinking coffee in New Zealand! A french couple arrived at Andrea’s place after a few days and we did a very nice walk around Devonport - along two beaches, one of them Cheltenham Beach, and up North Head. North Head and Mount Victoria were both important for the navy. From there, I got to take great photos of Devonport and the city centre. I will let the pictures speak.

Nun stand Devonport auf dem Programm. Dort leben ziemlich viele wohlhabende Leute und man merkt den Unterschied zu den anderen Vororten. Es ist wirklich schön in Devonport. An meinem ersten Abend hat Andrea eine vegetarische Lasagne gemacht, die so gut war, dass wir sie gleich noch einmal am nächsten Abend gemacht haben. Manchmal kann ich es nicht fassen, wie viel gutes Essen ich hier probieren darf! Ich habe ein paar bürokratische Dinge in Devonport erledigt und lernte Tina und Hafid, ein französisches Pärchen, kennen. Sie reisen seit Januar und haben sogar ihr eigenes Projekt gestartet. Zusammen haben wir einen langen Spaziergang durch Devonport gemacht, über zwei Strände und hoch auf North Head. Dabei konnte ich wirklich schöne Fotos machen:

 

 

Thanks to Joey, Chris, Andrea and Kerry for being part of my first week in Auckland - I feel honoured to call you my friends now. I really appreciate what you did for me. You made the start of my adventure in New Zealand so unbelievably easy and amazing. I hope to keep in touch with you the whole time and hopefully after I will have left New Zealand!
