Queenstown & Wanaka

Queenstown is really popular among backpackers. The drive was again more than spectacular and way too beautiful to have a nap in the car. Suddenly, we saw Lake Wakatipu in front of us… We stopped at every lookout we could see in time. They had great names like "the devil’s staircase“.

Von Te Anau aus ging es Richtung Queenstown, eine Stadt unglaublich beliebt unter Backpackern. Die Fahrt dorthin war mal wieder gewohnt spektakulär und viel zu schade, um ein Nickerchen im Auto zu machen. Wir waren ganz erstaunt, als sich auf einmal der Lake Wakatipu vor uns erstreckt… Wir haben dann doch mal wieder jeden Lookout mitgenommen, die so tollen Namen wie zum Beispiel „The devil’s staircase“ („die Treppe des Teufels tragen“) tragen. 

 
A lot of backpackers come to Queenstown to “get wasted“ (to say it with Jacob’s words). I’ve never been a big fan of partying so we went for an ice cream from Mrs. Ferg’s instead (white chocolate and chocolate brownie, yum!) and enjoyed a street musician’s music at the lakefront. Ina gave him some of her chocolate in the end! We also met Jacob again who came down to the South Island to look for a job. We just ran into him on the street again. Small, small New Zealand!

Viele kommen nach Queenstown, um mal wieder nächtelang richtig zu feiern - da ich ja noch nie ein Fan vom Partymachen war, kauften wir uns bei Mrs. Ferg’s superleckeres Eis (Weiße Schokolade und Schokobrownie!) und hörten einem Straßenmusiker am See zu. Ina gab ihm am Ende dann auch noch was von ihrer Schoki ab. Auch Jacob haben wir getroffen, der in Queenstown nach einem Job suchen wollte. Verabredet hatten wir uns nicht, wir sind ihm einfach auf der Straße über den Weg gelaufen. Neuseeland ist und bleibt ein Dorf!

We went up a mountain in the gondola from where we had a stunning view over Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables (Kiwis have a thing for giving places really great names). We went on the luge up there… Ina desperately wanted a picture of us in the lift, but when she wanted to give her sunglasses to a guy, I was taken away by the seat… so we walked down the hill and did it all again - successfully!

Mit der Gondel kann man auf den Berg hochfahren und hat von dort oben einen wunderschönen Ausblick über Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu und die Remarkables. Dort oben waren wir dann auch ein wenig sommerrodeln. Ina wollte unbedingt ein Bild von uns ihm Lift, aber während sie dem Aufpassertypen ihre Sonnenbrille geben wollte, hatte mich der Sessel schon mitgerissen… also sind wir den Berg runtergelaufen und haben das Ganze noch einmal versucht - dieses Mal mit Erfolg!

Queenstown is quite commercialized and rather expensive. Nevertheless, we liked this precious spot next to Lake Wakatipu. Our next stop was Wanaka and we decided to go over the Crown Range - the highest main road in New Zealand. We met Jem and Pom again who also wwoofed for Gina and are just delightful people to spend time with. Apart from that, we watched almost every sunset at the lakefront, went to the best cinema I’ve ever been to (with warm cookies during the intermission!) and enjoyed our backpacker lives again.

Queenstown ist doch recht kommerziell und teuer, aber dennoch gefiel es uns allen da ganz gut. Über die Crown Range, die höchste Hauptstraße in Neuseeland, ging es für uns weiter nach Wanaka. Wir trafen Jem und Pom, zwei ehemalige Wwoofer von Gina, wieder. Die beiden sind einfach zu jeder Zeit gut drauf und es macht jedes Mal Spaß, Zeit mit ihnen zu verbringen. Außerdem nahmen wir uns für viele Sonnenuntergänge am See Zeit, gingen viel in das schönste Kino, das ich je gesehen habe (mit frischen Cookies in der Pause!) und genossen unser entschleunigtes Backpackerleben.

Milford Sound

For me, Milford Sound is one of the most magical places in New Zealand and probably on earth. Milford Sound is a fjord within Fjordland National Park. It is a world hertitage site and it fully deserves it. I read that Rudyard Kipling called the Milford Sound the eigth Wonder of the World. I think he is right. Even the road to Milford Sound is spectacular.

Für mich ist der Milford Sound einer der magischten Plätze in Neuseeland, wahrscheinlich sogar auf der ganzen Welt. Milford Sound ist ein Fjord im Fjordland National Park. Damit ist er auch Weltkulturerbe und der Milford Sound verdient das wirklich. Ich habe gelesen, dass Rudyard Kipling den Milford Sound als achtes Weltwunder bezeichnet hat - da gebe ich ihm völlig Recht. Sogar die Straße zum Milford Sound ist beeindruckend.

It was definitely on my bucket list to see it. More important, it was Ina's main goal of things to see in New Zealand. The Milford Sound has been the background on her computer since she made the decision to come to New Zealand. And you know what? One point on my bucket list says "help somebody else fulfill a goal". I guess I can tick that point off now because I went with Ina to see it. I could not have imagined better company to do that.

Wir nennen den Tag "Scheineglück-und-Kamikaze-Sonntag", da wir trotz großzügig kalkulierter Fahrzeit doch erst 3 Minuten vor Abfahrt auf dem Schiff waren - und das war nur Inas sicherem Kamikaze-Fahrstil zu verdanken.
Ein Punkt auf meiner bucket list (Löffeliste) war es, den Milford Sound zu sehen. Noch viel wichtiger ist es, dass der Milford Sound Inas Hauptziel in Neuseeland war. Der Milford Sound war der Hintergrund auf ihrem Computer und auf ihrem Handy seit sie sich entschieden hat, nach Neuseeland zu kommen. Und wisst ihr was? Ein anderer Punkt auf meiner bucket list ist "hilf jemand anderem, ein Ziel zu erreichen". Ich denke, damit habe ich Ina geholfen und kann den Punkt von meiner Liste streichen. Ich hätte mir niemand Besseren als Ina vorstellen können, um den Milford Sound zu sehen.

Dunedin

On our way to Dunedin we come along the Moeraki Boulders - they look like big forgotten stones on the beach. Most of them are perfectly round though and you ask yourself - how did they get there?

Zu viert ging unsere Reise weiter nach Dunedin. Auf dem Weg von Oamaru nach Dunedin liegen die Moeraki Boulders - sie sehen aus wie vergessene Steine an einem Strand. Fast alle jedoch perfekt rund und man fragt sich - wie sind die denn da hingekommen?

The Maori are sure that the Moeraki Boulders are the fossilized goods of the famous canoe Arai-te-uru. I think they do look more like dragon eggs. Look at the open stone. Amazing, isn’t it? Everybody who has seen the animation film “Quest for Camelot“ will agree with me. The dragon eggs in the film are quite similar to the Moeraki Boulders - except that they had green guck in them.

Die Maori sind sich sicher, dass die Boulders das versteinerte Bootsgut des Kanus Arai-te-uru sind. Ich finde jedoch, dass sie schon sehr etwas von Dracheneiern haben. Vor allem, wenn man sich den halben Stein ansieht. Da ist doch bestimmt ein Drache geschlüpft. Jeder, der schon mal den Film „Quest for Camelot“ (dt. „Das magische Schwert“) gesehen hat, weiß, dass die Dracheneier da ähnlich aussahen, nur mit so grünem Glibberschleim drin.

 
Dunedin has a lot of charm. It is a university city and I think some of the buildings, like the railway station and the university building, are great architecture. We spent our days going into a lovely vegetarian café, strolling through the streets, visiting the market and hiding inside the library during the rain. I even ran into Jacob in our hostel - NZ’s is just such a small place.

Die Stadt Dunedin hat sehr viel Charme. Es ist eine Universitätsstadt und man findet dort tolle Architektur wie beispielsweise das Bahnhofs- und das Universitätsgebäude. Wir verbrachten unsere Tage damit, leckeres Essen in einem vegetarischen Café zu verspeisen, durch die Straßen zu schlendern, den Markt zu besuchen und uns bei Regen in der Bücherei zu verstecken.

We go up every lookout we see with Ina’s car. On our way up to the Signal Hill Lookout, we drove through a cloud for the first time. The street is windy and narrow, but we get a beautiful view of Dunedin and we are over the clouds!

Mit Inas Auto nehmen wir jeden Lookout mit, den wir finden können. Auf dem Weg zum Signal Hill Lookout fuhren wir zum ersten Mal durch eine Wolke! Die Straße ist mal wieder ziemlich kurvig und eng, aber oben angekommen wurden wir mit einer tollen Aussicht belohnt. Und hey, wir sind über den Wolken!

 
Another highlight in Dunedin is Baldwin Street - the world’s steepest residential steep in the world. Guinness World Records recognizes the street as the steepest one at a 35% grade. You can only imagine what that number means when you walk up the street (or drive, but we did not want to do that to Ina’s car). It is really funny every time a car goes up or down the street. It does not even look that steep from the bottom end or from the top. Anyway, I do not want to be a mailman here!

Ein weiteres Highlight in Dunedin ist die Baldwin Street - die steilste bewohnte Straße der Welt mit 35% Steigung. Man kann sich darunter erst etwas vorstellen, wenn man die Straße auch einmal selber hochgelaufen ist (oder hochfährt, das wollten wir aber Inas Auto auf keinen Fall antun). Es ist lustig mitanzusehen, wenn ein Auto hoch oder runter fährt. Auf den Bildern sieht man die Steigung nicht wirklich (erst bei dem Bild mit dem Haus). Hier will ich lieber kein Postbote sein!

Stranger things have happened in Oamaru

Oamaru is the city of steampunk in New Zealand including a Victorian-inspired street, a weird art gallery and a couple of penguin colonies - sounds lovely, doesn’t it?

Oamaru - hier findet man Steampunk, viktorianische Elemente, eine komische Kunstgalerie und zwei Pinguinkolonien - klingt doch gut, oder?

 
An active steam engine greets you while you cross the street. We make our way into an art gallery that reminds me very much of the film “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus“ (Heath Ledger’s last film, anyone?). Kind of spooky, nobody is there, but we find biscuits and tea prepared for us.

Eine aktive Dampflok pfeift, wenn man die Straße überquert. Wir besuchten eine Kunstgalerie, die mich sehr an den Film „Das Kabinett des Doktor Parnassus“ (letzter Film mit Heath Ledger, kennt den zufällig wer?) erinnert. Ziemlich merkwürdig und kurios das ganze. Wir finden dort niemanden, aber dafür Tee und Kekse.

Oamaru features another highlight - blue-eyed and yellow-eyed penguins! Although you might expect more penguins when you hear the word „colony“, we are happy to spot a yellow-eyed penguin in the evening. You can only visit the blue-eyed with a guided tour. And the view is well worth it, isn’t it?

In Oamaru gibt es noch ein weiteres Highlight - Pinguine! Unter einer „Kolonie“ stellt man sich wahrscheinlich etwas mehr vor, aber wir sind froh, zumindest einen gelbäugigen Pinguin zu sehen. Die blauäugigen kann man nur mit einer geführten Tour besuchen. Und dieser Ausblick war es doch wert, oder nicht?
