Rotorua and Wai O Tapu - where the devil farts

You will not miss the smell of rotten eggs once you come to Rotorua. It seems like hell itself exists under Rotorua. Rotorua is within an area of high geothermal activity - that means that you can find hot mud pools, steaming holes in the ground and the devil’s finest soup of sulphur.
The Kuirau Park right in the town centre reminds me a bit of the elephant cemetry of the Lion King.

It smells!
Das stinkt!

Lisa gets sad...
Lisa wird beim Anblick ganz traurig...

But then, everything is okay again!
Aber dann sind wie wieder glücklich :)

Wai o Tapu (Maori for “sacred waters“) is the wonderland of geothermal activity - an area with a lot of volcanic activity. Lisa calls it “the place where the devil farts“. And we have to agree - you can find anything from the devil’s ink pots, the devil’s hole and the devil’s bath (which was a shade of really chalky yellow) there. Unfortunately, we did not see the devil in person, but we were quite sure that he was farting the whole time and that was were the smell came from.
Best known is the so-called “Champagne Pool“ - it bubbles just like champagne and has amazing colours. Nature can be so impressive!

Concerning Hobbits

Outside of a very unspectacular town in the middle of Waikato, people report having seen hobbits. A long time ago, a location scout flying over New Zealand and looking for some nice movie sets, decided that he had found the perfect big tree and a pond to build Hobbiton there. Peter Jackson chose that place for a reason - obviously he did not want to be interrupted during filming. Without instructions from the iSite, it would have been slightly difficult to find the set.

Bilbo's place

 Just a few facts:
  • all the trees are apple and plum trees because they have the perfect size for the hobbits, but in the books, there are only plum trees so every fruit and leaf got picked by hand and plums and plum tree leaves were attached by hand
  • frogs had to be relocated from a pond because they were too loud so the actors could not be heard. Anyway, the frogs decided to come back so they had to employ frog scouts who would catch every frog trying to make its way back to the pond
  • planes were not allowed to fly over the filming locations
  • the hobbit holes are empty, all inside filming has been done in Wellington
It was a dream coming true for me and the ginger beer at the end was just perfect.

On my way

"Tell everybody I'm on my way
New friends and new places to see
With blue skies ahead, yes I'm on my way
And there's no where else that I'd rather be"

It's been over 5 months now. Over 5 months at the other end of the world. I faced good and bad wwoofing places, I dealt with my broken car, I met the most amazing and helpful people on this planet, I missed home, I bought a car, I started drinking coffee, I was full of excitement on my birthday, I went swimming in the ocean, I probably got bitten by a spider, I pushed my own boundaries, I learnt new words, I learnt how to carry three plates, I opened my heart to strangers...

I grew as a person. It disturbs me quite a lot when people think I am having an easy holiday here and can afford to travel NZ for a year. So far, I have rarely done any traveling at all. I've been working very hard over the last 2 months, facing 12 to 15 hours of work daily. I was exhausted, but I learnt to cherish every single minute I had to calm down. After all, I had one goal: going traveling for a few weeks without having to worry about working. And I know I am very lucky because I really like my two jobs. I am here to experience this country with all of my senses. I want to take nothing but photographs and memories and leave nothing but footprints.

My whole stay in NZ changed when I came to Tairua. Within a week, I had a place to stay, I had a job, I had friends. I had a place to call home.

3 months have passed since my first day in Tairua. I remember very well when I found the beach by accident on my second day and I knew I could not have found a better place to stay over the summer. I met so many unbelievably kind people and I feel very honoured to call them my friends now. I liked going to work every day eben though I was tired as hell, because I enjoyed working with the people there. My work was appreciated, and it was an awesome feeling to see the smile in strangers' faces.

I've seen the most beautiful places in the Coromandel, from Cathedral Cove to the top of Mount Paku, the hidden waterfall 10 minutes from our house, Hot Water Beach at night... I became really fond of the Easton family who had me stay for over 3 months. I met wwoofers from all over the world and I am hopefully going to visit them in their home countries one time. This is just another chapter of my journey, and I have no idea where it will take me - but I am excited for it.

I'm on my way.

Christmas in the sun

I can't tell you for how long I've been waiting to celebrate Christmas in summer. I have to admit - you do not really get the Christmas feeling over here, it seems more like an illusion the people try to hold on to. Anyway, I was working on the 24th in the morning, of course with a Christmas hat just to spread some atmosphere, and in the evening we decided to bake some Christmas cookies since we were all German Wwoofers at that time. It was, after all, an attempt to spread a bit of Christmas around and the gingerbread cookies turned out quite well! I reckon everybody needs their own Christmas cookie so I started writing our names on cookies with chocolate.

The next day, we celebrated the kiwi Christmas - traditionally with Christmas Crackers, a funny-looking Christmas tree, a Christmas lunch and the beach. My belly wasn't so happy about all the food I was eating so it decided to go on strike for a couple of hours. Atfer quite a filling lunch, we all went to the beach to take the classical Christmas pictures with Christmas hats on. What a different kind of Christmas!

Wentworth Valley, Whangamata and Opoutere Beach

On our second day off, we decided to do some hiking in Wentworth Valley, west of Whangamata. The weather was just right for hiking, not too warm, not too cold.
It was great fun to spend another day with Julia and Elena. We took Lena with us - she had come into our shop one day earlier and was just passing throught Tairua.

Roadtrippin' Coromandel

Elena, Julia and I started to take Highway 25 towards Whitianga and turned onto the 309 Road - wait, road? Not really. More gravel than road and almost too small to fit two cars next to each other. Julia loves to drive, to drive people. to drive in New Zealand, so she had the privilege to master the 309 gravel. We came across pigs, cows, goats, people walking in the middle of nowhere…

unser supermegatolles Auto

Our first destination was Coromandel Town. Well, there is nothing more to say. It is a typical kiwi town. One storey shops next to each other, one main street, not really anything to do. We spent some time window-shopping and went on to our next stop - New Chum's Beach.

Coromandel Town

Lonely Planet was absolutely right when it talked about footprint-free sand at New Chum's Beach. Nobody was there. Everybody in the car park seemed to do the walkway next to the beach. I always had the kind of feeling that we weren't at the real New Chum's Beach and as we found out later, we should have taken the walkway. Anyway, we enjoyed a few hours at the no-name-beach without any noise or stress. Yep, this is one reason why I came to New Zealand: coastline, beaches and summer. The water was still pretty cold though so we decided not to have a swim. Elena and Julia found the most beautiful shells I’ve ever seen on a beach, but you are not allowed to take them away.

no-name-beach

Back on the road we stopped in Whitianga. It is still a typical kiwi town, but with more streets and cafés. The girls had a milkshake and we took some pictures. Usually, most of the towns in New Zealand are not so interesting and you should plan more time for the hikes and beautiful nature. We wanted to see our final destination, quite a special one for me.

Unsere Route führte uns an Whitianga vorbei.

panorama of Whitianga

Cathedral Cove has been on my bucket list since I started making plans for New Zealand. It is a unique rock formation and it is very hard to get a picture without people, even though we were there during the week in the evening. There seem to be always enough tourists in New Zealand. I was pretty excited when we finally got there after the 45-minute-walk. What a shame I had left my camera at home (but I will be back with it). Luckily, the girls took some awesome pictures. There were even some people doing kayaking around Cathedral Cove and if it wasn’t so expensive, I would definitely do it.

All pictures were taken with Elena's camera!
